After leading marketing efforts for Avvo, Conrad Saam founded Mockingbird (https://mockingbird.marketing/), an online marketing agency focused exclusively on legal. Called the “Gary V of Legal”, Conrad is the author of The FindLaw Jailbreak Guide, a Google Small Business Advisor and held positions for various ABA’s Practice Management marketing committees. A semi-professional bridge arsonist, Conrad enjoys publishing Cease and Desist letters from unscrupulous legal marketing vendors. He once bought the keyword, “mesothelioma lawyer” for $4.76. Conrad is the proud owner of Zippy, the first and only chicken to be awarded the Lawyers of Distinction Top 10% Award, which recognizes lawyers duped into buying a $700 annual subscription to a plaque.

On Thursday, October 24, 2019, the CCBA Board is sponsoring its next Lunchtime CLE meeting at the Regent Ballroom in Savoy (1406 Regency Drive West, Savoy: www.regentballroom.com ).  For the when-does-Illini-basketball-start price of $17.00, you will receive lunch and 1 hour of CLE credit.  Lunch will commence at 11:30 a.m. and the CLE program at 12:00 p.m.  The topic is, “Assisting Elderly Clients & Their Families”; the speakers will be Catherine Barbercheck, Barbercheck & Associates, PC, and Chad S. Beckett, Beckett Law Office; moderator will be Susan Zielke, Land of Lincoln Legal Aid.  In addition, at the Meeting, the Sixth Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee will be presenting its annual Community Legal Services Awards at 11:45 a.m.  (Attached please find the October 24 Meeting Flyer.)

The panel discussion will cover several issues related to this topic including Medicaid, long-term care planning, estate planning, and special needs trusts. Speakers will provide examples of client situations and frequently encountered issues working with an elder client population. Interested attendees who attend the CLE will then be provided with information on how to get connected with pro bono matters in this area.

On Thursday, August 22, 2019, the CCBA Board is sponsoring its next Lunchtime CLE meeting at the Regent Ballroom in Savoy (1406 Regency Drive West, Savoy: www.regentballroom.com ).  For the return-to-school price of $17.00, you will receive lunch and 1 hour of CLE credit.  Lunch will commence at 11:30 a.m. and the CLE program at 12:00 p.m.  The topic is, “A Primer for Helping Those in Need of Legal Assistance” and will be presented by the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI).  The program will address the following:

“A Primer for Helping Those in Need of Legal Assistance”

PILI’s Sixth Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee recently launched an Ask-A-Lawyer Desk in the Champaign County Courthouse. The desk is currently available twice a month from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays each month. The desk is staffed by volunteer attorneys who meet with eligible self-represented litigants for up to 30 minutes to provide them with legal advice subject to a limited scope representation agreement. PILI is seeking volunteers for dates through December of 2019 and this CLE meeting will provide an overview of some of the basic topics for which self-represented litigants are often seeking assistance at the help desk. Attendees will receive a Frequently Asked Questions document to better prepare them for the help that may be needed when the volunteer at the help desk. Lawyers who have volunteered at the help desk recently will also share their experiences.

Recent studies have confirmed that the overwhelming stress that is commonplace in our legal profession disproportionately results in attorneys suffering higher levels of depression, anxiety, addiction, and other serious issues at rates much higher than those seen in the general population. While changing the nature of the legal profession is likely to be a slow process, individuals have the capacity to make small changes that have been scientifically shown to mitigate the negative impact of stress, reducing the likelihood of compassion fatigue and burnout. Participants in this program will learn:

• What Compassion Fatigue and Burnout are;

• The signs and symptoms of Compassion Fatigue and Burnout;

• What factors make lawyers particularly vulnerable to Compassion Fatigue and Burnout; and

• Best practices for prevention of Compassion Fatigue and Burnout.

Battle of the (County) Bars – June 9, 2019

We will be joining together to beat the McLean County Bar Association at softball. The following details are likely:

Location: Corn Crib minor league stadium, Normal IL

Game Time: 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm

We will be providing bus transportation to the stadium: The bus will leave from the Chase area at Country Fair Shopping Center at 11:30 and return around 4:30

Snacks and beverages, including beer, for sale at concession stand.

This is not in lieu of the traditional CCBA-only over/under 45 game, which should take place later this summer.

CCBA policy matters. If you have any comments on the change, please let us know.

Champaign County Bar Association

We’ll set up online Membership Registration in advance of the meeting, but if you choose not to pay online, we encourage you to bring your dues payments with you that day.

Brett, Miranda, and Emma are at the end of their terms, but they are happy to continue serving. If any of you wish to run, however, please let the Board know, supply Secretary Julie King with a one paragraph bio you’d like us to share with the membership by May 1st, and we’ll run a contested election at the Meeting during closed session.

Jerry Larkin of the ARDC will be joining us again this year to present on issues impacting our profession, and attending members will receive some much-coveted CLE credit.

For those of you who haven’t been there before, Lodgic has a restaurant and bar as you enter, and the Event Hall is in the back. The staff can guide you to the room. We’ll have some snackables in the meeting room, but please purchase any larger entrees and/or alcoholic beverages up front and bring them back with you. This is a formal meeting, so it will be a cash bar only.
