Annual Membership Meeting – May 22, 2019

Lodgic Everyday Community, Event Hall, 1807 S. Neil St., Champaign

We’ll be voting on a proposed by-law change as well as Board membership and other
CCBA policy matters. If you have any comments on the change, please let us know.

We’ll set up online Membership Registration in advance of the meeting, but if you choose not to pay online, we encourage you to bring your dues payments with you that day.

Brett, Miranda, and Emma are at the end of their terms, but they are happy to continue serving. If any of you wish to run, however, please let the Board know, supply Secretary Julie King with a one paragraph bio you’d like us to share with the membership by May 1st, and we’ll run a contested election at the Meeting during closed session.

Jerry Larkin of the ARDC will be joining us again this year to present on issues impacting our profession, and attending members will receive some much-coveted CLE credit.

For those of you who haven’t been there before, Lodgic has a restaurant and bar as you enter, and the Event Hall is in the back. The staff can guide you to the room. We’ll have some snackables in the meeting room, but please purchase any larger entrees and/or alcoholic beverages up front and bring them back with you. This is a formal meeting, so it will be a cash bar only.

May CLE

On Thursday, May 23, 2019, the CCBA Board is sponsoring its next Lunchtime CLE meeting at the Regent Ballroom in Savoy (1406 Regency Drive West, Savoy: www.regentballroom.com ).  For the recently increased price of $17.00, you will receive lunch and 1 hour of CLE credit.  Lunch will commence at 11:30 a.m. and the CLE program at 12:00 p.m.  The topic is, “Digital Marketing Tips for Your and Your Clients’ Businesses” and will be presented by Dan Galyen of WCIA.

So that the CCBA may know how many persons to plan for, please RSVP by Monday, May 20 to Alyx Parker at aparker@meyercapel.com.  Please bring your payment with you to the Lunchtime CLE.  Checks should be made out to the CCBA.  If you desire a vegetarian plate or have some other dietary restriction, please note that in your RSVP.  Because the Regent Ballroom charges the CCBA for the number of RSVPs, if you have provided your RSVP but are unable to attend, the CCBA will need 48 hours’ notice of the cancellation prior to the Lunchtime CLE meeting.

PILI “Ask-A-Lawyer” Help Desk Open House – May 9, 2019

The Public Interest Law Initiative’s (PILI) Sixth Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee has asked for our help and support of an “Ask-A-Lawyer” help desk at the Champaign County Courthouse, where private attorneys can donate half an hour of their time to help self-represented litigants. As part of our mission of promoting public service, we encourage members to learn more about this program at their “Open House” event, which will be held Thursday, May 9, 2019 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm in the Jury Assembly Room of the Courthouse.

CCBA is in the process of becoming a sponsoring bar association for the Illinois Supreme Court’s Lawyer-to-Lawyer Mentoring Program. According to their website, “the Program provides a structured yet flexible way for experienced lawyers to provide professional guidance and share practical knowledge and skills with a new lawyer.” The idea is that you have mentees with less than 5 years of post-bar exam experience and you team them up with someone who knows the ropes.

“Participants earn six hours of Professional Responsibility CLE credit toward Illinois MCLE requirements, which includes one hour of diversity and inclusion CLE and one hour of mental health and substance abuse CLE.”

Hearn of CliftonLarsonAllen, LLP, where Bethany is a principal in the Forensic and Valuation Services group, with 29 years of public accounting experience, the last 19 of which have focused in the areas of business valuation, litigation support, forensic accounting, divorce consulting, shareholder agreement consulting, exit planning, and transactions.
